• Smart Snacks: Nutritious and Delicious

Healthy snacking is an important part of a healthy diet. When chosen properly, snacks provide children with an extra boost of energy and nutrients needed to support a well-balanced diet.

Academy ISD is committed to promoting a healthy nutrition environment at school where students can choose healthier snacks, while staying within the New Federal Guidelines set forth in The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act or HHFKA of 2010. This act set new standards and asked the USDA to revamp its school snack standards. The new Smart Snacks in School rules set limits on calories, fats, sugar and sodium and encourage the consumption of dairy, whole grains, protein, fruits and vegetables. Schools must comply with these rules by July 1, 2014. As a part of our ongoing commitment to Academy students as well as abiding by federal mandates, Academy Elementary students may now choose more A la carte options at lunch time.

As of April of last school year students have the option of choosing items such as prepackaged popcorn, Cheese Nips™, and whole grain Elf Grahams™ just to name a few. These items along with bottled water and Ice cream will be made available during lunchtime and available for .50 cents each.

If your child has a note on their account restricting the purchase of A la carte items please make sure to send money with your child if you would like them to be able to purchase any of these items. If you would like to restrict your child from being able to purchase any or all items please contact the school cafeteria or send a note and we will add a note to your students account.

We are looking forward to making our school the healthiest it can be so our students can do their best work, while having the most options. If you should have any questions or concerns please contact Heather Thies - Director of Child Nutrition (254) 982 - 0150 and ask for the cafeteria.
